Junior B Team Off to Solid Start in 2009

The Jr. Flyers hopefully set the tone for a strong 2009 taking 3 out of 4 possible points from the Dowd Division's first place Washington Little Capitals this weekend.

Saturday's night game was hard fought from the first drop of the puck. Ryan Frear got the scoring started early in the first period, just 55 seconds into the game on a well placed shot against Caps goaltender Max Mulitz. Just under four minutes later, Scott Wallace would put one past the Caps goaltender showing no signs of a head injury that sidelined him for two weeks of play. The Little Caps would cut the lead to one around the half way mark of the period which would be the last goal before intermission.

In the second period, the Jr. Flyers stretched the lead back to two on a short-handed goal by David Moore who worked hard to steal the puck and bury it into the back of the net but the lead was short lived as the Little Capitals got a goal on the same power-play making the score 3-2. Little Caps forward Dimitri Ermakov would register his second consecutive goal at even strength to tie the game with just over four minutes left in the period but Zack Faircloth would put the Jr. Flyers ahead again just over a minute later by driving home a puck from the low slot.

Entering the third period, it was the Little Caps' CJ Sweigart who struck first putting one past Jr. Flyer goaltender Garrett Nesbitt. However, Ryan Frear would not let the Little Caps back into the game as he scored just under three minutes later, registering his second goal of the night. This goal would hold up to be the game winner and Garrett Nesbitt turned away some late quality shots in the third period to secure the win for the Jr. Flyers.

Sunday mornings match-up would prove to be just a close and even more intense. The Jr. Flyers came out of the gate focused and prepared, dominating early but were unable to find the back of the net for the first two periods of play. The positive was, neither did the Washington Little Caps. Scott Wallace gave the Flyers a one goal lead just 31 seconds into the third period and Jim Ketler capitalized on a face-off win at center ice to bury another one past Little Caps goaltender Matt Tyler just eight seconds later. However; a penalty called against the Jr. Flyers just over a minute and a half later was what the Caps needed to get back into the game as defenseman Chris Vu fired a slapshot through a screen past Flyers tender David Donzanti.

Both teams battled back and forth throughout the third period until the Little Caps' Stewart Bell was able to tie the game with just over seven minutes remaining. Neither team found the back of the net in regulation nor overtime and the game went to a shoot-out. Despite a strong effort in the pipes from Donzanti, the Jr. Flyers were only able to register one goal in the shootout from Matt Leonardis which would not be enough as the Little Caps' Pat Kerbuski was able to squeeze number two passed Donzanti for the game winner.

Despite the OTL, the Jr. Flyers determination shown by taking 3 out of 4 potential points from a talented Little Caps squad is what the coaching staff will look to continue throughout the remainder of the season.

Jr. Flyers take two out of three; move up in Dowd Division Standings...

The Jr. Flyers opening showcase game wasn't an easy one, as they battled back to pick up a win in their non-league contest against the MJHL South's Palm Beach Predators by a score of 5-3. The Jr. Flyers victory was a direct result of the team's ability to capitalize on penalties taken by the Predators. Every Jr. Flyers goal was scored on the power play as the team capitalized on 5 out of 12 penalties taken by the Predators. David Moore registered the team's first goal of the night on a feed from Jim Ketler. The Jr. Flyers would take a two goal lead on a shot by Ryan Frear but the Predators would cut the lead in half just over a minute later sending the teams into the locker room 2-1.

Palm Beach tied the game on a goal halfway through the final period but Drew Zucker put the Jr. Flyers up 3-2 by just over three minutes later. The play went back and forth for most of the period but the Predators would eventually tie the game for the second time with just over six minutes to play. The Jr. Flyers movement without the puck caused the Predators to take a penalty late in the came and the Jr. Flyers once again capitalized on the undisciplined play. David Moore found the back of the net for his second time of the night, establishing a lead the Jr. Flyers would not relinquish. Scott Wallace added an empty net goal with 39 seconds left and David Donzanti played strong in net as the Jr. Flyers dodged a bullet with the win to start off the weekend.

The Jr. Flyers made sure they were ready for their second game of the showcase. From the drop of the puck, the players seemed more prepared which was evident by their puck possession and pressure on the New York Saints in route to a 5-0 victory. Jim Ketler got the Jr. Flyers scoring started by crashing the net and hammering home a back door pass from David Moore. Ryan Frear registered his 16th goal of the season by sniping a shot low far side from the bottom of the circle. Following Frear's goal, three Jr. Flyers would register their first goals of the season. Kurt Noce found the
back of the net before the end of the first period, working hard away from the puck and shooting on his way to the ice. Jeremy Miller scored his first goal of the year when the goalie came out to play the puck and Miller reached out, making a nice play poking it through the five hole and put the Jr. Flyers up 4-0. North Carolina native and newcomer to the team Zach Faircloth finished the Jr. Flyer scoring with a shot from the bottom of the circle which found its way through the goaltender. Garrett Nesbitt was perfect on the day, not letting a single puck get passed him although he was tested on numerous occasions.

The last game of the showcase would put the Jr. Flyers against a tough Portland Junior Pirates squad. The Jr. Flyers came out in the first period and dominated play, peppering the Pirates goaltender who weathered the storm in net. Ryan Frear continued his strong play on the weekend and found the back on the net on a five on four putting the Jr. Flyers up 1-0. The 1-0 lead would be short-lived however when the Pirates speed created an odd man rush and a well placed shot high short side sent the teams into intermission tied at one. Several bad penalties cost the Jr. Flyers the momentum they carried into the game. Mid-way through the final period, a speedy Pirate forward drove the net hard and squeezed one past goaltender Philip Allmaier for a 2-1 lead. The Jr. Flyers came back strong but despite multiple opportunities could not find their way back onto the scoreboard. A late goal by the Pirates with just over three minutes left in the game sealed the deal and despite a flurry of pucks sent to the net, the Jr. Flyers could not capture their third tournament victory and would travel home with two out of three wins on the weekend.

With two wins for the showcase the Jr. Flyers now stand alone in second place in the MJHL Dowd Division and look to maintain this lead as they battle divisional rivals the Valley Forge Minutemen at Ice Line on Saturday, December 6th at 8:00 PM.

Junior Flyers pick up four crucial weekend points...

The Jr. Flyers Junior B team picked up four much needed points this weekend knocking off their division rivals, the Philadelphia Little Flyers, by scores of 6-1 and 7-2.

On Saturday, it was the Jr. Flyers special teams which gave them the victory. After an early goal by the Little Flyers who took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, the Jr. Flyers remained focused and their aggressive play led to undisciplined penalties by the Little Flyers. Veteran Ryan Frear notched his eleventh goal of the year to tie the game at one. Nine minutes later, defenseman Sean Neilsen took a pass from down low and fired it past Little Flyers goaltender Parker Carroll for what would hold up to be the game winning goal.

The Jr. Flyers came out strong in the third period and their aggressive play was too much for the Little Flyers to handle. David Moore would compliment a few highlight reel hits by adding a goal just 57 seconds into the third period at even strength. Matt Leonardis and Matt McCusker would both tally powerplay goals and James Ketler would cap off the scoring by adding his seventh goal of the year at even strength.
Sunday's game would fair no better for the Little Flyers. Ryan Frear who had four points in the contest led the way by registering a hat trick and scoring the teams first two goals of the afternoon. Three other Jr. Flyers players would register three points each. Matt McCusker added two goals and an assist, defenseman Reese LePard had a goal and two assists and David Moore continued his strong play with three assists. Things turned a bit chippy early on when Jim Ketler and Joe Martin squared off and dropped the mitts. Both teams did not shy away from the physical play and there would be two more fights in this up-tempo game, the first between Drew Zucker and Ryan Wood and the second between Jeremy Miller and Dylan Dignan, before things settled down. The Jr. Flyers stayed focused and finished the game strong, allowing only three goals against on the weekend.

With their strong play as of late, the Jr. Flyers are proving to the league they are going to be contenders come playoff time and a team no one can take for granted. This group of players is starting to take shape and their hard work is paying off. With a big win two weeks ago over the division leading Central Penn Panthers, the team has won its last five games in a row. Next weekend will be a big test against a strong Washington Caps team in a battle for a top spot in the MJHL Dowd Division.

Player of the Week

Ryan is currently tied for 12th in the league in scoring.
