Jr. Flyers Roll over 2nd Place Rockets

Propelled by 2 goals from Bobby Connor and 3 assists from Dave Devine, the Jr. Flyers defeated the 2nd place NJ rockets 7-4 in a hard fought game at the Prudential Center on Saturday. Despite the Rockets jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period, the Flyers quickly answered back with Steven Swavely and John Mazzarella netting a goal a piece to leave the game deadlocked at 2-2 going into the first intermission.

Coming out strong in the 2nd period, the Flyers continued on the attack with Bobby Connor scoring two even strength goals in the period to give the Flyers a 4-2 lead heading into the final period of play.

The Flyers padded their lead at the beginning of the third when Justin Krute connected on a Jason Ritchey pass 1:49 into the start of the period, to give the Flyers a 5-2 lead in the game. After the Rockets scored twice in the third to pull within a goal, Jr. Flyers' defenseman Eric Rutz answered back with his second goal of the season to give the Flyers a 6-4 lead,
which was capped off in the last minute of play when Alex Cottle tallied an empty net power play goal to give the Jr. Flyers the 7-4 victory.

"You know its always going to be a tough game when you come into Jersey to play the Rockets" reported Jr. Flyers Head Coach Dave Dorman. "After getting down 2 goals early into the 1st it would have been very easy for the guys to just give up, so I'm really proud of the determination that we showed in fighting back to get the win. We got production today from a lot of different players, and I thought Tyler Ross did a great job for us in net."

With the win, the Jr. Flyers jumped ahead of the Little Flyers in the standings, and now only trail 3rd place Washington by 5 points in the division. The Flyers will be back in action on Wednesday night when they again take on the NJ Rockets at the Prudential Center at 8:30 pm.

Jr. Flyers Struggle at AJHL Showcase

After a good start and entering the Showcase on top of the AJHL South Division, the Jr. Flyers could not improve their position in the standings, dropping three straight in Cromwell, CT.

Friday night pinned the Jr. Flyers against the Northern Cyclones. The Cyclones would get on the score sheet early when Dan Kauffman registered his first of two goals on the night just 3:29 seconds into the first of two halves. The Cyclones would take a two goal lead on a goal just about halfway through the first period. Both teams went back and forth for the remainder of the first until Nick Gable's hard-work in front of the net was rewarded with a rebound goal at 18:24 into the period sending the Jr. Flyers into intermission down 2-1.

The Jr. Flyers came out strong in the second half and worked hard in the defensive zone but too many breakdowns and a brief lack of focus left Kauffman alone in front to bury his second goal of the night at 7:08 into the period. The Jr. Flyers retaliated quickly and defenseman Dan Feyock got off a quick snap shot through a screen that found its way into the back of the net just under a minute and a half later.Although the Jr. Flyers fought for another opportunity, Cyclones goalie Martin Clarkson remained tough between the pipes and the Jr. Flyers could not get another puck past him for the remainder of the night. The Cyclones skated off the ice with a 3-2 win.
Saturday, the Jr. Flyers came out against the Boston Bulldogs for their second game of the showcase. Although the score was tied at half time, 2 - 2 on goals from Jayson Ritchey and Christian Tasker the Bulldogs speed and toughness down low was not matched by the Flyers players. While the Jr. team tried to come out quickly against the Bulldogs and capitalize on a few opportunities, it was the Bulldogs aggressive play which led to three goals in the second half and a final score of 5 - 2.

The last game of the tournament for the Jr. Flyers would unfortunately not result in a different outcome. Once again, missed responsibilities in the defensive zone led to a 5 - 1 loss at the hands of Walpole Express. All six goals in the game were scored in the first half. The lone Jr. Flyer goal came off the stick of David Devine who ripped a power play goal top corner off a pass from Tim Visich. The Flyers came out in the second half looking like a completely different team, pressuring Walpole and forcing them to take a time-out with just over six minutes into the period but despite the sustained pressure, the puck would not cross either team's goal line.

The Jr. Flyers will look to get things back on the right track when they play their cross town rivals the Little Flyers next Saturday, October 4th at 6 PM.

Player of the Week

Andrew was the key ingredient to the Jr. Flyers 2-1 win over the New Jersey Rockets on Sunday. Andrew made 39 saves and kept his team in third place in the South Division standings. You can expect the Jr. Flyers to go far into the playoffs in their first year, if they continue to have spectacular goaltending.
